Summer meals, eating outside, fresh and local produce...you can't beat it!

Let's talk about iron. Iron deficiency is super common in menstruating people, in pregnant people, and in young kids. I seen folks with iron deficiency every single day in my practice. Here are some tips:

🤜 cook with cast iron cookware. This adds up to 8mg of iron to your food.

🤜 choose iron-rich foods everyday, especially if you are in a high risk group for deficiency. My go-to's: eggs, broccoli, pumpkin seeds, dried fruits, smoked mussels. Also think: red meat, poultry, spinach, black strap molasses, whole grains.

🤜 pair iron-rich foods with acidic foods, such as tomato, citrus, vinegar. This helps absorption. Or consider taking a vitamin C supplement at mealtimes to help absorb your iron.

🤜 avoid eating calcium-rich foods, black tea, coffee and red wine at the same time as iron-rich foods. These foods block iron absorption. Separate them by at least an hour.
